Discuss the concepts self-esteem, self-efficacy, and self-concept.  What are the differences and overlap in these terms?

Self-efficacy is how we think we will do or how we think others will view us. For example if we ask ourselves, “Will I be liked or laughed at?” (p.404) According to Woolfork, Bandura’s defines it as “peoples beliefs about their capabilities to produce designated levels of performance that exercise influence over events that affect their lives.” (p.404) It is also a way that we are able to deal effectively with a certain assignment. It is “future-oriented” (p.405) “A person’s sense of being able to deal effectively with a particular task. (p.404)

Self-concept is when we use others as an indication where we need to be or what we need to do. We use others as comparisons either for external or internal. (p.405) It is what we believe about ourselves.

Self-esteem is how we value ourselves based on our abilities. It is connected with judgment from others, which will determine our self-worth. (p.405)

Self-efficacy, self-concept, and self-esteem even though they are different in their meanings they do overlap. It is how we view ourselves. Self-concept includes and self-efficacy where is includes perceptions about one’s self. The difference is that self-efficacy is judgments about ones abilities. Self-esteem is when we judge our self-worth.
