Introduction
This essay reflects on what it is to be an effective manager in a globalised world. It consists of two parts: the first is a literature review, which dwells on the fact that good management (in both a local and global context) requires harnessing what was, once upon a time, the domain of the “personnel department”, in particular, leading and controlling employees. The literature also concerns itself with the skills that are required to adapt to and exploit global or international workplaces, markets and cultures, and suggests avenues for future research. The second part is a reflective journal covering four areas of management using first person voice. The focus of this essay will be the theoretical underpinnings around managing people in a globalised world, and bringing that back to reflect on how these aspects have impacted on the author’s own journey to become an effective manager in a globalised world.
