Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right

“This is all your fault!” Draco Malfoy called over the expanse of the cauldrons steaming with various colored smoke on the table in front of him. His normally placid gray eyes were shining with the fury he felt about landing in detention on a Friday night.

“Me? I’m not the one who apparently can’t count to ten, you stupid pillock!” Hermione Granger screeched in reply, her posture reflecting her indignation as she straightened to her full height and somehow managed to look down her nose at the blond who towered over her. “You nearly caused the cauldron to explode because you added too many white oleander blossoms to the solution!”

A dark look gathered on Draco’s face in the same way thunderclouds did before a catastrophic storm. “If you hadn’t been acting like a spoiled brat and ignoring everything I said, I wouldn’t have been trying to get your attention!”

“Silence, children!” Professor Snape bellowed over the escalating insults being passed between his two most prized students. Pinching the bridge of his hooked nose with his fingers, he tried to stave off yet another oncoming Granger-Malfoy migraine and questioned, not for the first time, why he had ever thought it would be a good idea to have this pair work together.

Once it seemed like the throbbing in his head was under control, the Potions Master chanced another glance at the Gryffindor and Slytherin who were trying to make the other drop dead by the power of their glares alone.

“Now,” the professor started, his silky voice promising deadly retribution if their compliance wasn’t immediate. “Let’s be clear. This is meant to be a detention and both of you are here because you couldn’t keep your petty squabbling out of my classroom. The consequences of your altercation could have been dire if we hadn’t just finished brewing the Suffocating Solution. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Professor Snape,” they both answered in a monotone chorus.
