On April 20th/1964 in Pretoria, South Africa at the docks just outside the Supreme Court of South Africa. One of the greatest speeches of all time was performed by one of the world’s greatest man. Nelson Rolihahla Mandela was born on July 18th/1918. He is a former President of South Africa. His term was from 1994-1999. He was also leader of the Umkhonto and a representative of the Africa National Congress or A.N.C. This speech was later called “I Am Prepared to Die”.

In this speech Nelson Mandela gathers people together on the docks outside of the Supreme Court of South Africa. He is obviously addressing the people there for his trial, but he is also addressing the county of South Africa.

Nelson Mandela talks about many things during this speech. On the big picture he pleads his case to the people as well as inspiring his people. He talks about the inevitability of violence, the political situation in South Africa and the creation of the Umkhonto.

Violence usually is not the best way to go about things, but in this case I believe it was most certainly the right way. Mandela states that if his people didn’t respond with violence it would have meant the acceptance of inferiority to the government and the white man. He points out that his people are on the point of acceptance to their inferiority or the point of where they beginning their rebellion towards the government. Mandela and the people of South Africa obviously choose the path of rebellion.

The political situation during this time was a huge catalyst towards the rebellion and resistance towards the government of South Africa. The constant acts of tyranny towards his people as well as the exploitation of the South African people. Then there are the constant cruel acts towards his people by the whites.
