When we talk about Christopher Columbus, everyone always considers about his discovery of the New Land and sees him as a hero. According to some data, Christopher Columbus was born in Italy in 1451. He became a sailor in 1465, but after the shipwreck in 1470, he moved to other places. Finally, he discovered a new land, Paradise, where friendly Native People lived. However, this closed relationship between Columbus and Native People was ended fast because of the invasion of Europeans and their bad actions. Therefore, after all occurred problems, Columbus’ image caused two opposite waves in Canada and the United States by many of the European and the Native American. The former proposed National Columbus Day to honor Christopher Columbus as a hero while the latter opposed Columbus Day due to the genocide of millions of the Native People.

Author’s Major Ideas and/or Findings Presented in the Article

First of all, movement of the European to the Native land caused much of dissatisfaction. Columbus brought Europeans and slaves to the Native land of Tainos to enlarge his area and expand his power. Unfortunately, when the Spanish moved to this land they also brought much kind of viruses with Native people lacked of immunity. Moreover, the Spanish mostly used modern weapons to attack Tainos. As the result, about fifty thousand Tainos died because of abuses, the starvation and diseases, they also lost their own lands.

The second debt that the European has still not paid to Native Americans is unfaithful. According to Robert Robideau’s data, Europeans had not known of democracy and freedom until Native people taught them. Besides, Tainos also provided much of food, medicine and political structures to save Europeans. Unluckily, Native Americans did a favour and earned resentment instead. After all those sincere helps, Tainos also were savages....
