My Dear Fellow Drivers:

To begin with, the law for texting while driving was official this January 2009. The new also prohibits sending or reading text messages not only on cell phones, but any electronic communications device including e-mails read on laptop computers. First, the ban is to decrease a lot of accidents caused by distractions. Also, Everybody who is driving should be concerned, and people who are not driving should be concerned. The importance of passing this law are to decrease the accidents, to help some more states pass the law, and because the government enforced it.

In addition, one reason the law was passed because it will help decrease the accidents of drivers. While many motorists routinely send text messages from behind the wheel, studies show the practice is as dangerous as driving drunk. The new state law makes typing or sending text messages while driving a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500. For example, I experienced driving while texting and it’s not easy because you have to look at the road and text at the same time. Next, it’s even harder with a phone that changes positions when you text like my phone, so this law will make a big difference with the driving. While it's difficult to determine how many collisions have been caused by text messaging, studies have shown that it is one of the most dangerous distractions for drivers. Truck drivers sending text messages were 23 percent more likely to crash or nearly crash than drivers who were not distracted, according to a study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. "It's impossible to send a text message and follow the key rule to safe driving - to keep both hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road," said Lori Rakowski. If you take your eyes off the road for just one second while going 65 miles an hour, you will travel 100 feet without seeing the road.
