The Casks of Amontillado is one of the most mysterious stories ever. It is unclear why Montresor killed Fortunato. We also don’t know the thousand wrongs Montresor mentions. Montresor is an unreliable narrator because he has obviously lost the ability to reason and he is crazy.

Montresor never says the thousand wrongs that happened. He doesn’t say these wrongs because he is crazy. He just says plainly that he has wronged too many times. Since he never said the wrongs, we do not even know if they happened at all. Montresor also says “My heart grew sick – due to the dampness of the catacombs”. (Book) You think Montresor feels guilt but then it is because of the catacombs. Another reason why he is unreliable is Montresor laughs and drinks it up with his victim. This shows Montresor doesn’t care when he kills Fortunato. In a way though Montresor is a crazy and smart man, he laid everything out he needed. He knew what time the workers were leaving and he led Fortunato into the catacombs. Montresor on his death bed tells of this murder. Even near his own death, Montresor relishes in the death of Fortunato.

More of Montresor’s signs of craziness are “I must not only punish but punish with impunity”. Montresor can’t be trusted because he is just very insane. He is being driven by something evil within him. He is very scary how he feels no remorse or sorrow for his victim. Montresor seems to be that he is very evil. I think he may be possessed by a demon or something. Some of the stuff he says is very scary and I don’t think a normal person would say something like that.

In conclusion, Montresor is an unreliable narrator due to his madness. He cannot be trusted due to his insanity. Montresor is very evil in his actions. He feels no remorse and fifty years later he still loves how he did his deed. Montresor is very crazy and he cannot be trusted at all throughout the entire story.
