Students and College Writing

It has been said that college students cannot write effectively. But I beg to differ. Many teachers assume that the students they are instructing cannot write, when in fact they can. A student has to be comfortable to write better. They also have to have the right instruction to guide them along the path to become better writer. There are reasons why students have a hard time writing. The student cannot always be hammered by the mistakes that they may have made on his or her paper. This just causes stress. There cannot be a specific rule system that has to be followed exactly as the rules say. Lenience has to be accepted or all of the writer’s creativity will be blocked.

In Laurence Musgrove’s “The Real Reasons Students Can’t Write” Musgrove claims that students would write better if they would learn to value and care about what they are writing. Like I said, it is harder to write about something that a student cannot relate to. It can be tough for the student to write if they are not informed about what the paper or project is on. The student becomes stressed at not knowing the subject, and also when the student knows that they have to do the task by a certain deadline. I do not know anyone that like being stressed out. This causes the writer to become cranky and his or her writing is affected. I know that I write better about things that I can relate to than things that I have no idea about and really do not care about. Writing is like a sport. Everyone dreams to become the best that they can be at a sport, but they have to have confidence to play better. The only way for the player to gain confidence is not by looking at the things that went wrong during the game, but by looking at what they did right during the game. When a student sees all the red on their paper their confidence becomes very questionable. Or at least mine does. It hurts to...
