Transition Metal Synthesis
Report
Part A:
Table 1. Summary of synthesis data and results.
|Desired Product |CuIBpy |(CuI)2Bpy |
|Mass of CuI (g) |0.252 |0.252 |
|Mass of Bpy (g) |0.409 |0.068 |
|Experimental Yield (g) |0.437 |0.204 |
|Color |Red |Yellow |
|Theoretical Yield (g) |0.455 |0.234 |
|% Yield |96.04% |87.23% |
Observations/Notes:
The red product, synthesized by Rob and I was the thermodynamic product. This formed rather slowly. It began as a pale orange and over a ten-minute period it slowly turned a rich red. The yellow product synthesized by Julian was the kinetic product and formed rather quickly.
Part B:
Table 2. Absorbance data for the standards.
|Solution |Abs |Conc. (M) |
|A |0.049 |0.002 |
|B |0.134 |0.004 |
|C |0.314 |0.008 |
|D |0.411 |0.010 |

Product |Mass of Sample (g) |Abs |Cu2+ (mol/L) |Cu2+ in sample (moles) |Cu2+ in sample (grams)...
