The American author Sylvia Plath is a person whose remarkable life story and stunning poetical work often intertwine. Still, she manages to be an honest and intimate author while staying mystic and unique. Her works are sometimes shocking, sometimes hard to understand but never fail the purpose to deliver a powerful message and bring strong emotions to the readers. Sylvia Plath`s genuineness and directness deservedly made her the first poet to win the Pulitzer prize posthumously.

Sylvia Plath was born on 27 October 1932 in Massachusetts. Her mother, Aurelia Schober Plath, was a first-generation American of Austrian descent. Her father Otto Emile Plath was from Germany. The family lived in Winthrop, Massachusetts from 1935 to 1940. Otto Plath died on November 5, 1940, when Sylvia Plath was only 8 years old. After her father`s death Sylvia Plath, her mother and her younger brother moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 1950, Plath attended Smith College and excelled academically. She obtained a Fulbright scholarship to Newnham College, Cambridge. There, she continued actively writing poetry and publishing her work in the student newspaper “Varsity”.She married the poet Ted Hughes in 1956 and they lived together first in the United States and then in England. The couple had two children together: Frieda and Nicholas. Following a long struggle with depression and a marital separation, Plath committed suicide in 1963, when she was just 30 years old. Controversy continues to surround the events of her life and death, as well as her writing and poetic heritage.

It is hard to write about Sylvia Plath`s poetry because her work does not resemble anyone else`s. Still, an appropriate definition for it is “confessional poetry”. She had lived and suffered everything she wrote. Her works do not seek recognition-they are real, painful and often shocking.
