BSA310 Week 1 DQ1
Computer business systems have been around for 40 years. Desktop computers have been around
for 20 years. Why do business systems, in general, still need more development?
Business systems today still need more development in order to keep up with the increasing amount of
technological innovations as well as increasing productivity in order to stay competitive. The less man‐
hours required to perform a task frees up workers to perform a greater amount of tasks, thus increasing
productivity.
For example, 30 years ago bookkeepers were still posting accounts into large green ledger sheets
manually (in pencil). It took days to prepare a medium‐sized company’s payroll, calculating hours
worked, PTO time, deductions, and physically writing the checks; (I know; I have done it).
Today a small or medium sized business can purchase out‐of‐the‐box software such as Intuit’s
QuickBooks and do it in under an hour or even less depending on the plug‐ins available like a time clock
add‐in. Such software would automatically calculate the hours worked, overtime rates and deductions
needed and print the checks.
Some companies I have read about that use electronic ID badges now have that data automatically
transferred when the employee enters the building and logs in to the system. Accounting and other
departments must have the proper business systems in place to make use of this type of automation. By
automating simple and complex processes the workers can produce larger volumes or more diversified
tasks, this requires a system to be in place and to be constantly updated as the company grows or their
needs change and being more productive will enable the company to offer their clients competitive
rates.
