BLACK STRUGGLES

Abstract

In this review of the racial struggles of the African American in the United States, we

will explore the subject matter from the viewpoint of a 3rd party person looking back

into history. The historian will discuss findings on his research on the experiences,

social, political, and cultural issues faced by the black citizens throughout the years. in

the United States. We will explore the laws passed over the years that were designed in favor of racist agendas and those that were eventually passed to protect people of color from racial discrimination.

It is no secret in America that the struggle of the African American to gain equality has been a very hard fought battle that is still not at it's end. One reason the republican party was formed in middle 1800's was because of anti-slavery. The Kansas Nebraska Act of 1854 was widely supported by the Democratic Party. This act was set to repeal the Missouri Compromise act. The Missouri Compromise was an attempt to stop the spread of slavery in the Louisiana Territory. The first candidate the Republican selected was Col. John C. Fremont who ran against pro-slavery candidate, Democrat James Buchanan. Even though Fremont lost the election, it is interesting to know that he was the Republican Party's first anti-slavery presidential candidate.

When President Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860, he became the first Republican elected President in the U.S. President Lincoln ran on the basis of anti-slavery and was quoted in 1858 in one his grand speeches as stating " A house divided against itself cannot stand.
