I. Introduction

The name of the country of Argentina comes from the Latin word “Argentum” and could be translated as “Land of Silver”. It is one the leading countries in South America. Argentina was first explored by Juan Diaz de Solis circa 1516, Argentina slowly progressed under Spanish Rule and Buenos Aires was established in 1580. Napoleon then conquered Spain around 1808, the Argentinians were then free to set up their own government, and they did in 1810. On July 9, 1816, independence was formally declared. Having become independent, Argentina still remained a large area of land with very few people. The next chapter of Argentine history has to do with numerous civil wars within Argentina. At that time the country was broken up in the major urban center of Buenos Aires ruled by fairly organized government and almost a dozen provinces that were controlled by their major land owners. The country of Argentina had already encountered a lot of national crisis and issues, yet they still managed to keep up with today’s booming modern society.

II. People

Argentina is a large country, thus it has a large population. It is constituted by 23 provinces and the self-governing Federal District of Buenos Aires. According to statistics, Argentina's population was estimated at approximately 41,776,000. More than one-third of the population lives in or around Buenos Aires, the capital and the largest city. Most Argentines are native born of European extraction—mainly the descendants of late-19th- and early-20th-century Spanish and Italian immigrants. Foreign-born residents—mainly Europeans—accounted for some 4 per cent of the population; the rest (less than 3 per cent) consisted principally of mestizos (of mixed European and Indian cultures) and Indians.
