a. What, if anything, do you do or say to Janet? Remember, you have only 12 hours before the executive meeting.

First and foremost, I would have termination documents drafted immediately. I would have them placed in a folder and kept on my desk for review. In addition to the termination, I would have a notice prepared to disclose that due to the known theft, we would be pressing charges against her. I would then inform my second in command of the alleged theft, and ask that person along with the auditor to be present at least for the first few minutes of a private meeting with Janet. Janet would be called into my office upon completion of those two documents and confirmation of the other two members of the team to participate. Not knowing the scope of the theft beyond what has been identified by the auditors, I would first share the auditor notes with Janet and ask her to explain the discrepancy. If she can reproduce the $100,000 missing, we can move forward as planned. In the event she cannot reproduce it immediately, the auditor would be asked to pass along a note to Cy Systems asking for an extension to the closing due to some clerical scrutiny we were going through to ensure everything is correct before completing the sale.

I would ask Janet why it was taken, and how she planned to repay it if indeed it was taken from the company. If it was an accounting error, or something else that can be resolved I would ask for her to complete the entry so the books balance and to do it expeditiously so we can close on time.

In the event that she confesses to taking the money, I would ask how she would handle the situation if I or another employee were discovered to have taken any money from the company, and how the action might reflect on our core values, contradicting them.
