Data Mining

Abstract

In this paper I will describe data mining and its usefulness. I will give examples of data mining tools such as query and reporting tools and multidimensional analysis tools. I plan to show how different tools can be used for various types of data mining. Finally, I will describe some career opportunities created by data mining.

Data Mining

The development of information communication technology (ICT) (Hartman, L.P., DesJardins, J., pg390) has made it possible for enterprising individuals and companies to post term papers online for use by others, whether for free or for a price.

Regardless of the motivation of the posters, I believe that they have the right to post the information as long as they are ethical in their practice. By this I mean that they do not betray the trust of the users of the information by posting untrue or malicious information and that they do not infringe on the intellectual property rights or steal the information (Hartman, L.P., DesJardins, J., pg393)

I agree with the popular defense that posting the term papers will encourage the faculty to modify exams and/or topics. I feel it is just another example of how accessible information motivates innovation. Rather than recycling the same paper for years, instructors must now push themselves to think of new material and in turn passing that continuous learning curve on to the students.

The other common explanation for posting term papers is that they can be used for research and are not infringing on intellectual property rights as long as the works are cited. I agree with this to a certain extent. I do see that the information is useful and that citing the work is ethical, but in some cases the original author of the work could be losing income from a free posting.
