SOJOURNER TRUTH

Sojourner Truth was an abolitionist and a women’s rights activist. She was a very important person in her time and still is to this day. She stood up for women’s rights and for the black community. Without Sojourner Truth, women and African Americans probably wouldn’t have as many rights as we do today. By examining Sojourner Truth’s early life, her career choices, and her legacy, readers will better understand how she secured a place in the pages of our nation’s black history.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in the year of 1792. She was born in Hurley, NY. She was one out of the twelve children that her parents, Betsey and James had. Her master’s name was Johannes Hardenbergh. Her slave name was Isabella Hardenbergh; she was 46 years old when she changed her name from Isabella Hardenbergh to “Sojourner Truth.” She got out of slavery when she was 30 years old, so that was in the year of 1822.

Sojourner Truth’s career choice was to be a women’s rights activist. She gave one of her speeches Ain’t I a Woman in 1852 at the Akron Church in Ohio, there she was over 50 years old. She stood up for women rights and African Americans. In her time she was the leading Women’s Rights Activist ever in history.

Sojourner Truth’s legacy was that women and African Americans had the same rights as the man (white or black). And she fought for that dream until she died in 1883. She was an activist until she was 91, and that’s how old she was when she died. That’s all about Sojourner Truth’s life.
