TRENDS AND ISSUES IN RESTAURANT SANITATION

Two restaurants — one near Yonge and Wellesley and another in midtown — were shut down last month by Toronto Public Health for rodent and sanitation problems.

On Feb. 23 inspectors reported a rodent problem at Sushi Hana at 591 Yonge St. The inspectors also reported some surfaces weren’t properly washed and an employee had failed to wash their hands before starting their shift.

The restaurant, which is set to reopen after dealing with the mouse problem, is also facing charges for other sanitation issues, according to a report in the Toronto Star.

The city’s DineSafe website shows the eatery passed a Feb. 27 inspection.

The following Ventura County establishments were closed recently after unsanitary conditions were identified by county Environmental Health Division inspectors.

China Palace, 341 Arneil Road, Camarillo. Cockroach infestation. Unsanitary conditions. Closed Nov. 21 and reopened Nov. 24.

The South China Restaurant at 513 Mount Pleasant Ave., near Davisville, was also shut down after a Feb. 21 inspection.

The DineSafe website shows the eatery failed to properly deal with a rodent infestation. The restaurant was also cited for “failing to prevent gross unsanitary conditions.”

The South China Restaurant has a history of problems and was given three conditional passes over the past year.

FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayetteville restaurant is closed for business because of sanitation problems.

Sushi Court in the Westwood Shopping Center scored a 69.5 during its last inspection. Some of the most serious issues involved how shrimp, crab and fish were stored and prepared.

Other problems include:

 Handwashing sinks were used for food preparation.

 There was not any soap for washing hands.

 "Hot" water was not hot enough to properly clean or sanitize.

The restaurant must now go through the entire permitting process before it can re-open.
