Global Business Cultural Analysis: Italy

This class has given me the opportunity to research a country that I have a great interest in. Just recently, my company started a business relationship with a new vendor located in Italy. In my early research, I was very surprised to learn of the diversified industrial economy of Italy and the high gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. According to Wikipedia, in 2010, Italy had the tenth largest economy in the world and the fifth largest in Europe in terms of purchasing power parity. Italy’s strength lies in the processing and manufacturing of goods. The major industries are precision machinery, motor vehicles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, electric goods, and fashion and clothing. They were hit hard by the economic crisis of recent years but have adopted austerity measures to help reduce their national debt. This has strengthened my interest to learn more about Italy in regards to international business. Additionally I would like to learn:

1. Being a member of the European Union, how does Italy plan to handle the current crisis with the Euro and the recession? How will this effect global business?

2. What are the largest imports and exports for Italy and which countries benefit from them?

3. What part does corruption play in Italy and how is it regulated?

4. Does religion play a role in the nation? Is so what type of role and what does it possibly regulate or control?

5. What are the country’s business ethics, values and attitudes? How does it impact the business community?
