Current Affairs – issues making the headlines in 2012 – ideas for the Learning Contract

Students will be asked to concentrate on one issue ‘area’ from the following:

1. Leaders and the culture of organisations

2. Ethics and social responsibility

3. Managing diversity

The literature review will be mainly on one of the above broad issues and then they will narrow down to investigate an aspect of this issue (case study) as it is being played out in the media and by other means. I have started collecting issues making the papers and have the following that students will have access to.

1. Leaders and the culture of organisations

• Defence Force – skype sex scandal and handling by ADFA and Minister (culture of ADFA, deep rift between leaders)

• Star Casino – allegations of sexual harassment, bullying etc. Reputation in tatters.

• Police hampered by codes of silence in investigations – ‘People hiding a brutal rapist’

• USYD college suspends 30 students after orientation drinks party behaviour

2. Ethics and social responsibility

• Suisse vitamin company advertisements – misleading claims

• Flight Centre – ‘price fix’ allegations

• QLD election – Campbell Newman , leader LNP– attack on his ethics

• Diryt tactics used by door-to-door collectors for charities – pressuring people

• Bus driver used camera to film girls – installed camera in floor of bus

• Coles and Woolworths – suppliers refer supermarketers to ACCC

3. Managing diversity

• ‘Putting gender aside in a world dominated by men’ – Australia’s top female investment banker says she has felt no discrimination

• Language used to portray women – Georgetown University Law Student denounced as a ‘slut’ after giving evidence in official hearing into employer-funded contraception

• Too short to be a trucker – 156cm woman denied job as semi-trailer...
