Week 2: Organizational Communication Challenges & Classical Approaches

I adhered on getting my favourite hot chocolate from Starbucks before settling down to start with my “suffering life” as taking Communication and Organizations, a critical 9-unit course in my final semester. Sitting in the lecture hall for 3 hours was not easy; brain cells died faster, gastric pain started rolling in the deep and eyeballs were popping out. However, the topics introduced by Ms. Catherine actually caught my attention, especially the three principles of organizational attitudes by Henri Fayol, it's brought back my memories when I was working in a dance company. Our leader, which is also the founder and the principal of this dance company, has a very good connection with us, the employees. As one of the employees, I realized that our leader is creating a more organized operating system when it comes to organizational communication with the employees. We had meetings once a week to discuss how to work in a team effectively and we were given freedom to speak out our own opinions. There were no dissensions in the organization ranks as the leader is more focus on general interest rather than individual interest.

We were completely taken aback by our lecturer after attending the tutorial classes, a briefing class about each assessment that we need to start working on in this week and submit our draft by next week. Ms. Catherine gave all the guidance and examples on how to draft for our assignments in class but I have to say that, my brain short-circuited and needed to be rebooted. Around me, everything was in fast-forward while I was motionless sitting in the middle of it all. I put my stationeries back in place and sat without moving, feeling the slightest trace of frustration. In a nutshell, this would be a stressful week for all of us!

“Susah susah sekarang, senang senang kemudian”, a quote to comfort myself.
