Accessing Affordable Healthcare

Health Insurance and healthcare access are two topics that have been debated on for several years. My thesis statement is, “Having access to affordable healthcare will improve the outcomes and life expectancies of American citizens.” I believe that this will be an effective thesis because there has been numerous research studies and investigations performed on this issue. Healthcare reform is a very important topic at this point in the lives of Americans. This law will determine if every citizen will be able to have access to the healthcare that they deserve. Other countries like Canada have implemented a country wide healthcare program that is funded by their government. I will use several resources including Medline, Medscape, and government sources to research this topic. I will also access the statistics from other countries and compare how the nationwide healthcare system has affected the quality of life of their citizens. I will avoid biased research by only using those sites that pertain peer reviewed research and statistics.

Implementing a program where all citizens will have access to competent and quality healthcare with or without their ability to pay will help to increase the quality of life in America’s citizens. In 2008, the Census Bureau reported that 47 million Americans were uninsured. (Johnson, 2007) That number is steadily increasing each day. It is estimated, by the American Journal of Public Health, that more than 45,000 Americans die each year simply because they do not have health insurance. (Park, 2009) This number can be decreased drastically by implementing programs where our citizens can have access to the healthcare that they deserve.
