Your Medium: Radio
Your Name: Samuel Tan
Q: Understand in broad outline how that medium is regulated. Now consider how the
Internet is impacting that medium you have chosen. Discuss how you think that
medium should be regulated when the Internet is in the picture.
The current situation:
Radio in Singapore, serves as a one-stop news medium for entertainment, information
and education. It reaches almost all homes and is easily accessible to all people,
including the young.
Some dos and don’ts of radio:
Should not undermine public security interest or public confidence in the law
and its enforcement in Singapore
Matters pertaining to race and religion should be handled sensitively.
Songs with questionable and vulgar language should not be broadcast as it
may in any way promote wrong moral values and lifestyles
Undesirable programmes that are unfit for children should be exercise with
care as there might be likely effects on children with numerous implications.
Advisory notices to be given for programmes with contents, which may be
potentially disturbing or upsetting so as to enable listeners to make an
informed choice.
How should it be regulated with Internet in the picture?
No regulations of online radio, hence there should be regulations put in place
for radio stations, regardless if it’s online or offline, it should go through a
regulatory authority and have it registered. All registered radio channels must
adhere to the code of conduct and guidelines set by the regulating authority.
Failure to adhere to the code of conduct will result in monetary penalties and
legal actions.
Listeners to be registered as a member before gaining access to the radio
stream. This will filter the users by age and limit the amount of content made
available to younger users.
For Chinese radio, dialogues and songs in dialects in a programme may be
allowed provided the context justifies usage and is used...
