Business Communication Trends

Whether it is of a personal or business nature, communication is important in any type of relationship. Communication with friends and family are considered personal and are very informal. However, when dealing with business matters any communication should be done in a professional manner. Whether a person is a manager, supervisor or a receptionist, communication plays a big role in day-to-day activities. In today’s workplace, there are different trends that a person can use to communicate which will assist him or her in daily work activities. Verbal, non-verbal, or written communications are ways a person gets their point across.

As a supervisor in my organization, communication plays a big role in my everyday work activities. I communicate daily with staff, managers and patients. I need to communicate with staff regarding staffing or patient issues, scheduling changes, or any procedural changes. Ineffective messages do not get results and may obscure ideas (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, Chapter 1). I must effectively get my message or point across so that it is correctly understood by my audience. I need to be clear and succinct with my words and ask if there are any questions before I end the discussion.

Also, there are several tools that I can use to assist me with getting my messages to others. The most common tool is electronic mail, also called e-mail. I can use e-mail to send letters, memos, or announcements to immediate office staff or to the whole organization. A new innovation that has become a trend is the Smartphone. Not only can a Smartphone make calls, but it can assist in sending and receiving e-mails, access the Web, and create word processing documents (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, Chapter 1).
