Cisc p81 – Chapter 8 – Networking

Networking Terminology:

• Bandwidth (Digital bandwidth): A measure of the ability of a communications system to transmit information. Usually expressed as a number of bits per second (bps).

• Latency/Delay: The measure of time it takes for a given quantity of data to be transmitted between its source and destination

• Jitter – Is a measure of variation in latency. Its effect on bandwidth is undesirable. i.e it slows data transmission down. (Flickering on a screen)

• Range – the measure of distance (area) to which a specific network technology is limited

• Point to point – communications that are restricted to two parties between a specific source and specific destination. (Telephone)

• Broadcast – One sender is transmitting to multiple receivers (T.v, Radio)

• Local area Networks (LANs) – work by broadcasting e.x point to point is intended for only the receive and sender, but its message is sent on a LANs

• Modulation – the modification of an analog signal to carry digital information. (digital to analog conversion)

• Demodulation – The reverse of Modulation. The extraction of digital information that was encoded on an analog signal. (analog to digital conversion)

• Modem – Modulation and demodulation. A modem is a device that sits between a digital computer and an analog communication mefium (phone line) to allow the former to communicate over the later.

• Server – a computer that supports many connections from other computers and provides those other computers with services and facilities such as email/websites

• Client – a users computer. Clients are the computers that get services from servers.

• Downloading – the act of receiving a file(s) from a server

• Uploading – the act of a sending a file(s) to a server

• Dial-up – a modem that imposed digital information on sound waves that were then transmitted by the telephone syste to a similary equipped computer elsewhere. Many weaknesses – limit to 56 kbps...
