Many food companies that have grown into well known, national, brands started with humble beginnings. One such company is Frito Lay. Frito Lay was born in a San Antonio kitchen in 1932 and had an initial production capacity of just ten pounds per day. That number pales in comparison to where the company stands today as the largest and fastest growing snack food manufacturer in the United States. With products that are enjoyed worldwide, Frito Lay currently holds the title of being the leading corporation in all major snack chip categories. Simply put, Frito Lay seems to have found the right recipe for success.

Today operations are a major focus of the firm. This includes everything from designing products for new markets, to meeting changing consumer preferences, to adjusting to rising commodity cost, to subtle issues involving flavors and preservatives.

Take for instance the well known Doritos line which originally launched in 1966 and has since grown into one of America’s leading food brands. Frito Lay brings in more than $1.5 billion in annual U.S. sales from this line alone. These sales can be partially attributed to the fact that so many varieties of this single product are available. Flavors include Nacho Cheese, Cool Ranch, Spicy Nacho, Black Pepper Jack, Guacamole, Ranchero, Salsa, Salsa Verde, Taco and Toasted Corn, as well as Baked! Doritos, Natural Doritos and Doritos Light with that all of which contain zero grams of trans fats.

The Doritos line is also one of Frito Lay’s most recent lines to be overhauled. At their Plano, Texas facility, they unveiled the updated line that included a face-lift to the logo, new packaging and also magnified the commanding crunch and bold flavor that Doritos is recognized for. The exciting new look for Doritos is the latest update to the brand’s packaging since 2001.

To help the company increase interest of the newly updated, but well known Doritos line, they turned to mass media to get the word out. Frito Lay...
