Fall of Berlin Wall

The Allies during World War II were mainly the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. When the war ended these countries divided up the defeated Germany into East and West Germany with the Eastern part being occupied by the Soviet Union, which was communist. Berlin, the capital of Germany was in the Eastern section so that was problematic. The answer was that the city of Berlin was also divided into an eastern and western section. Shortly after the war, the relationship between the Soviet Union and the other Allies deteriorated severely. In the middle of the night on August 13, 1961 a wall was erected by the Soviets to keep people from going into the western part of Berlin and out from under Communist rule. The living conditions in East Berlin became far different than the soon thriving West Berlin part of the city. Many living in the East were anxious to get out. In addition, people had relatives, jobs, and friends in the Western part and were not allowed to move freely back and forth. Thousands made it across to the free world, but many people were killed trying to get over the wall through the years.

The wall was more than a physical barrier. It was also a symbol of In the huge division between the free world and the Communist ruled world during the Cold War era. In November 9, 1989 almost spontaneously, it was destroyed. The Soviet Union was disintegrating and so were the tightly held Communist controlled government.
