I. A few general comments

A. Why Reform of the WTO is the Wrong Agenda: A Reaction

The World Trade Organization (WTO) is supposed to be directed towards the synergy of world markets, resulting in the economic development of all its constituent countries. However, the article showed otherwise, revealing it to be the dastardly tool used by economic giants in sapping-out what is left of whatever resources developing countries have. It is an organization which contradicts its own ideals of equality and democracy as its movements and decisions are dictated only by those who have power and are directed towards the boon of those same nations.

The whole idea of the WTO is control: Control of economic statures, of imports and exports, of technological developments, and of world work forces. This idea is, of course, very good IF it is for the benefit of the whole. Now, to determine whether or not its actions are in favour of the organization’s ideal of global equality, a quorum consisting of representatives from every country that is a part of the organization must be organized. This is the most democratic mean of decision making as everyone is taken into account. The WTO, however, does not do this. They, instead, take only the votes of the 4 economics leaders: The United States, Japan, The European Union and Canada. This method is nowhere near democratic as most other nations, especially developing nations, which consist of the majority of the organization itself and are supposed to be the ones being focused, are ignored and, in some cases, completely left out. Its methods are completely rigged towards these economic giants. Even if they do say that their decisions are for everyone, they have absolutely no concrete method of determining the needs of every single nation. And there is also the question of personal biases. After all, it’s the representative’s job to make sure that the actions of the organization are favour of their country.
