This article is a post independence reflection from the Editor-In-Chief of The Gleaner. It serves as a reminder to the Jamaican public that amidst their recent Olympic success and attainment of their 50th Anniversary of Independence there is still much to do to bring the country to one that shows positive economic growth, low unemployment levels and a better standard of living for all. Despite the passion with which the writer addresses these issues, the validity of his arguments has been undermined by contradiction.

The initial tone of this article is one of positivity, highlighting the achievements of the nation in various facets. He boasts of the success of attaining the 50th year benchmark which is a noteworthy feat for any state. The editor also praises the country for high rankings in the global freedom index and the triumph of having an international trademark. Jamaica’s large-scale recognition was also boosted by their recent triumphs in The London 2012 Olympics .

The Editor lists the many social and economic problems which has been plaguing Jamaica during their fifty years of independence. He highlights their stagnant economy coupled with their substantial national debt as the prominent issues facing the country. The debilitating culture of the Jamaican politicians has supported this lack of economic development which is continuing to move in a downward trend. He believes that the solution to the country’s dilemma lies in Government reform and public edification.

It is with the solutions presented by the Editor that one can see the breakdown in his argument and the undermining of his overall message. There are three instances in the article where mention is made of the need for discussions between the Government and the people. The Editor shows that this dialogue will be imperative to gain nationwide support and understanding of the restructuring that will be needed for advancement of the country.
