My Caribbean Experience

Beautiful beaches, good food, a calming atmosphere and great history is what the Caribbean is made up of. Before I took this class I was not a big fan of trying new things, and I didn‘t want to travel across water, but I did want to visit the islands. Since I had to write an experience paper I had to put my thoughts aside and experience new things. Instead of me leaving I found many places that catered to Caribbean people. For my experiences I had the chance to go to two places to have Caribbean food which was good. I also got to experience the Junkanoo culture. I also watched some Jamaican films and listened to the music. Then I took Salsa lessons that were hard. There were plenty of other things I could do but those stuck out to me.

In August I got the chance to visit family in Miami and I ceased

the opportunity to find some Cuban food. I ate at this Authentic Cuban restaurant by the name of Corky’s, and it was quite delicious. The atmosphere was also great. They had Cuban music playing and it was a real home-like vibe. As I looked over the menu the chicken, rice, peas, and plantons caught my eye. I had never had peas and rice like that before, and it didn‘t taste like my grandma‘s black eyed peas and rice. The chicken was also good, but my favorite part was the plantons. I was not a big banana fan until I had them. They were fried just right and so juicy making me ask my mom and sister for theirs. I plan to go back to Corky’s and try something else on their menu, because my first food experience there was a success. It surprised me that all Cuban food wasn’t just weird stuff. Because I thought they ate just anything and that was not the case. As a matter of fact some of their food has similarities to African American soul food. There may have been things I would have tried differently but I did not want to go to far off the edge. Maybe I will want to dive in the deep end when I go back.
