Alexandre Dumas

Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24 at, rue de Lormet in Villers-Cotterets. His father Thomas Alexandre was born in Haiti to the Marquis Antoine, a minor nobleman and Marie Cessette, a black slave woman who had risen to the rank of general in the Army. His father was also an Army service man who had three kids with Alexandre’ being the youngest. He loved his grandmother dearly, but bad news came when she passed February 26, 1806. The family had some hard times. Dumas was sent to study at the Elementary school that abbe’ Louis-Chrisostome Gregeorie had opened in his home town in 1810. While attending this school Dumas learned Latin, penmanship, which he excelled in, reading, and his mathematics were very poor because of his lack of interest. He also studied the violin, where he later discovered how poorly educated he was, but he work hard to replace the education that he was missing.

When he finished school, he started working as an errand boy for a family friend and local notary. He would run legal documents to people who were unable to come in to sign them. While on errands he would go hunting which he later mastered which he used to help support the family’s income. In 1819 he devoted a love to the theatre where he began having mistress, which always wind up in courts due to divorces and other things that a woman can take a man to the courts for. Dumas seemed to always stray from his work which resulted in him having to find work due to his lack consistency to the job. His credit became default and on December 10, 1851, he exiled due creditors who threatened to put him in jail.

Due to his fine penmanship, he began to edit and write novels. During this stage he was always from house trying to continue work. It was during these periods of time that he had many mistress.
