Decriminalizing a little pot: Thoughts and effects within Belize

Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana or as our society and many others consider it “pot”) is a natural herb that has been around and being utilized for ages. Recent societies, however, have prohibited the widespread distribution and use of the plant. As such many researchers have conducted all kinds of research to figure out if the Legalization of Marijuana is in fact the best route for these societies to take. Literature on this matter is abundant as it has been a long debated topic. The Belizean society has chosen to keep Marijuana illegal as well thus seeing the use of Marijuana taboo.

Marijuana has proven to be a plant that has economic, commercial, environmental and medical benefits. I stand to substantiate that our Belizean society would benefit from legalizing Marijuana and create a viable option for income for our society rather than agreeing that legalizing Marijuana would be a moral breakdown in our society.

It is noted that most Belizeans are only familiar with some of the benefits of the drug, that being, medical purposes. True, there are many that use the drug to ease their suffering from ailments like: Insomnia, Cancer, Aids, or chronic aches and pains. While it is true some states have legalized Marijuana for medicinal purposes, in Belize Marijuana remains illegal to: possess, cultivate, import, sell or consume.

It is very important to pay keen attention to both the pros and cons on this topic. I remain firm on my notion that legalizing Marijuana would create a regulated industry to generate income for our country and better governmental investment rather than government spending in the fight against illicitness of cannabis and high convictions of cannabis related crimes. I strongly believe that the pros outweigh the cons on this topic.
