Antenna Types
Discuss each of the three antenna types, giving their advantages, disadvantages, and other important details. Include a picture or diagram of each.
Omnidirectional
The Omnidirectional antenna for WLAN also known as a dipole antenna is a type of antenna that radiates its signal out in all direction equally. These antennas provide a 360 degree horizontal radiation pattern. These are useful when covering a large room, or for providing general coverage.
Some of the advantages of the Omnidirectional antenna are: very easy to install due to its 360 degree horizontal pattern. It can be mounted upside down from a ceiling in the indoor environment because its shape that is very convenient to attach these antennas to the product. Draw back to this antenna is, it is not good for long range wireless networks such as the highly-directional antenna.
Semi directional
The Semi directional antenna focuses its energy on one direction and that is why they are primarily used for short and medium range remote wireless bridge networks. Advantages are, they are ideal for use in libraries, where rows of bookshelves create long corridors, as well as in hospitals with their long hallways. The draw of this antenna is that, it does not cover large area, but focuses on a direct path. Semi-directional antennas have a fairly small coverage area with a limited width when compared with omnidirectional antennas.
Semi-directional antenna
Highly-directional
The highly-directional antennas are used for long distances; point-to-point wireless links, such as connecting buildings that are up to 42 kilometers(25) miles apart. They are not commonly used for WLANs. One of the advantages of this antenna is, it allows honing in on one direction more efficiently. It can also improve the...
