The Reasons and Origin of Shaving

Shaving not only makes a man look well groomed, but younger as a matter of fact. Not to mention the fact that shaving exfoliates (cleans and removes) the dead skin on your face. Shaving directly goes hand-in-hand with maintaining cleanliness. For example, If you do not shower adversely you will stink or if you do not brush your teeth on a regular basis they will rot out and/or tarnish. For as long as history goes back, men have worn beards due to the lack of having a razor, but even when the razor came along, most men still preferred beards. It is a sign of the chracterization within orthodox religion even to this day. Although, shaving began in the stone ages because it reduced the breeding grounds for lice, fleas and small rodents. Also, it is said that shaving was used to eliminate the beard as a place for an enemy to hang onto during combat, to make it easier to eat, and there is a certain superstition associated with a heavily bearded man with old age and death, in addition to the superstitious belief of spirits, it is said that the spirits entered the body through hairs on the head. The idea of shaving also presented an aesthetic approach to personal hygiene may have begun at this time, though Egyptian Priests may have practiced something similar to this earlier. Alexander the Great strongly promoted shaving within his army during his reign in the 4th century BCE because he believed it looked tidier. Shaving changed in the United States after World War I, for two reasons Gillette had introduced the "safety razor" in 1901. Before this, shaving with a straight razor could be a dangerous activity in which the risk had to be assessed by the person shaving, in the end, it was better left to professionals. The only tradeoff pertaining to this act is that professionals charged a lot for their services.
