Introduction

Malaysia Day is held on September 16 every year. The reason of celebrated Malaysia Day is to remember the built of the Malaysian federation on the same date in 1963. It also markup the joining together of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak, and Singapore to form Malaysia. So as to coincide with the sixth Hari Merdeka(Independence Day) ,the formation of the Federation of Malaysia was then announced on September 16,1963 as Malaysia Day. Several issues depiction to the Indonesian and the Filipino objection to the formation of Malaysia delayed the declaration to September 16 of the same year. In order to let the United Nations team time to carry on referendums in North Borneo(Sabah) and Sarawak so that in regard to the two states participation in a new federation, the delay was done.

In advance to the formation of Malaysia, Singapore and North Borneo unilaterally declared independence from the United Kingdom on August 31, 1963, thus coinciding with the sixth anniversary of the Malayan independence.

The nationwide Independence Day celebration is still held on August 31, the original independence date of Malaya, while Malaysia Day is a public holiday only in East Malaysia. However, this has caused some minor discontent among East Malaysians in particular since it has been argued that celebrating the national day on August 31 is too Malaya-centric.

Malaysia Day is different from National day/Independence day(31 August 1957).

Malaysia Day (16 September 1963) is the formation of Penisular Malaysia(before was name Malaya) and Sabah with Sarawak. Malaysia Day is usually just an acknowledgement of the day not a public holiday. Beginning from 2010 year,16 September became public holiday because it coincide with Yang di Pertuan Agong of Sabah birthday.

The reason Sabah and Sarawak makes 16 September a holiday because on the same day, it's the Head of State (both Sabah & Sarawak) official Birthday.
