Inheritance

Javal Patel, the author of the essay “inheritance”, focuses on an inherited symbolism upon past generations. Her thesis on this essay expresses her emotional state based on her knowledge on India’s independence and how the Swing had affected her ancestors. Her thesis on this essay is fully developed as the essay progresses on to her description of the swing. Her main idea is to inform readers about the importance of meaningful heritance that takes over some of the controversial issues such as the independence over British government.

The structure of the essay is easy to understand as he starts off the anecdote of the history behind the swing. He describes the swing like it’s in front of the reader with thoroughly descriptive adjectives and specific measurements. He explains how British government had put so much of tax on businesses and how difficult it was for Indian farmers and business people to survive with such heavy taxes on their shoulders. His purpose is to remind readers about our inheritance of background history that was significant to us. Some point in our life, we encounter small aspects of surprises taken upon what our ancestors made, did and ate. He uses lots of descriptive words to describe the swing which is the main point of this essay. His most effective usage of words are ‘connections’, ‘ancestors’, and independence.’

Expectations were not met since I thought most of the inheritance has to do with capital incentives, but this essay made me realize there’s more to inheritance than just capital incentives. Any of our motions, sayings, things, or even small materials that are important to us can be inheritances to future generations. Author did a great job of maintaining the importance and the main idea comprehensible for us by using controversial issues. My expectation of capital incentives and material incentives has definitely changed.
