Week 15-16 Exercise A – Web Matrix Installation and Execution

Web Matrix Installation

Web Matrix will allow you to design and run your very first ASP.NET application. Web Matrix creates a personal web server for you and therefore, you don’t need to configure or create your own web server. Once you have installed web Matrix, it should appear on the program menu.

You will be able to download Web Matrix from the Discussion folder in OasisPlus.

After download ASP.NET Web Matrix program should appear on your programs menu, by firstly clicking the start menu. Clicking the ‘ASP.NET Web Matrix’ program launches the Web Matrix environment.

Before you start the exercises you will need to know the names of the various components in the Web Matrix Main Window – see PowerPoint slides, week 15 slides 13-16

Exercise 1 - Your first .aspx page (ex1.aspx)

When we first launch the program we automatically get an ‘Add New file’ window, as shown in the figure below. This window allows you to select what type of dynamic page you wish to build and what programming language you are going to use to build it.

Leave the Template set to ‘General’ and ‘ASP.NET Page’. You will need to save the location where you wish to save your .aspx page (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents), so enter the appropriate folder followed by the file name ex1.aspx. Also leave the Language set to Visual Basic.Net. Click the OK button and you should see the following page:

Type the text ‘Welcome to my Web Page’ into the Document Component. Go to the menu bar and select the Format pull-down menu, change the text to bold and align to centre. Now select the HTML tab on the Toolbox Component and then drag a Horizontal Rule below the text. (You will find the Horizontal Rule towards the bottom of the list).
