INTRODUCTION

The term "Personality Disorder" is generally misunderstood as implying that something is wrong or something is missing from a person’s personality. However we all have personalities that are in one way or another hard to define as normal, so how do we technically know when a person has a personality disorder or what a personality disorder is. Personality disorders can be defined as “a diagnostic category of psychiatric disorders characterized by chronic, inflexible, and maladaptive patterns of relating to the world” (Hoerman, 2011, p.1).

This assignment will focus on one of the personality disorder namely borderline personality disorder. The aim of this assignment is to find out the problems and issues surrounding diagnosing and classifying borderline personality disorder in adolescents aged between 16-20 years and the classifying of borderline personality disorder in the DSM-TR IV.
