DEFINITION OF DECIMALS
Decimals are useful in our everyday lives. A decimal is any number in our base-ten number system. Specifically, we will be using numbers that have one or more digits to the right of the decimal point in this unit of lessons. The decimal point is used to separate the ones place from the tenths place in decimals. (It is also used to separate ringgit from sen in money.) As we move to the right of the decimal point, each number place is divided by 10.
1.Decimal and Fraction
- To represent 1/10 and 1/100 as decimals and vice versa.
The fraction 1/10 and 1/100 can be written as 0.1 and 0.01 respectively.
The numbers 0.1 and 0.01 are called decimals.
A decimal is a number that represents a fraction in which denominator is in the form of 10, 100, 1000 …
Ex : (a) 1/10 = 1 divide 10 = 0.1
(b) 1/100 = 1 divide 100 = 0.01
- To read and write decimals
0.5 is read as zero point 5
0.08 is read as zero point zero eight
2.197 is read as two point one nine seven
28.25 is read as twenty-eight point two five
- To change a fraction into a decimal and vice versa
To change a decimal into its equivalent decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. Ex : 7/8 = 7 > 8 = 0.875
To change a decimal into fraction, count the number of places that the decimal points has to moved so that the decimal becomes a whole number. Ex : 0.97 = 97/100
2.Place Value and Value of Digit
-To state the place value and value of each digit in a decimal.
The value of each digit in a decimal is determined by its position or place value in the decimal.
Example : 0.216 = place value = Tenth
Value of digit = 0.200
-To compare the values of two given decimals
The number of decimal places (d.p.) in a decimal is the number of digits after the decimal point.
Example :
0.4,2.3 and 13.0 each has 1 decimal place.
0.28,3.80nand 12.04 each has 2 decimal...
