There is one speech that has always followed me, that is Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech “I have a dream”. It was one of the most well written speeches I have ever heard, at times it did not sound like a speech at all. Being African American, the speech impacted me more, to know that all the people that came before me got hope from this speech. I have had experiences with racism and all I want is for everyone to accept me and anyone else who is not like them. I make it a point to tell my children not to see color when you pick a friend, if that person is nice to you be nice to them, Dr. King wanted us to be accepted not cast away like garbage on the street.

“We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.” (King, 1963) Back then we protested and were involved in riots, Dr. King try to encourage our race to not be violent to prove a point, be civilized. He had a dream that black children and white children would join hands one day, and we have. Togetherness is a beautiful thing; together we can go further than we have ever gotten in any situation. To know that this speech still has truth and value is beyond belief. Although slavery is over, racism is still prevalent in the United States of America and other parts of the world. I believe Dr. King would be astonished to know that his dream has finally come true. This speech will live on forever and will change lives one at a time, the words still resonate everywhere and not only during black history month. I do not look at it as an “African American speech”; I see it as a speech of hope and dreams for every race and religion. For everyone who has been discriminated against or put down because you are not the same refer to Dr. King’s speech for inspiration and hope. If we were all the same, I am pretty sure the world would not be that interesting.
