Abstract

I come from Lithuania. Since my childhood, I was traveling around the world and living in different countries. This developed a sense of nationalism and curiosity about my homeland.

Recently Lithuania celebrated the 20th anniversary of Sąjūdis establishment. Sąjūdis refers to a ‘Reform Movement of Lithuania.’ Twenty years ago, Sąjūdis to many Lithuanians was a ‘glimpse of hope’ that was supposed to guide them to the liberation from Soviet rule.

Thanks to Sąjūdis, I was always claiming that I was born in the independent Lithuania. It happened that Sąjūdis came to power in Lithuania and announced independence on March 11th, 1990. I was born 13 days later. Theoretically saying, I was born in the independent Lithuania. I never cared about the fact that Lithuania was recognized as an independent country by other countries more then a year later in late 1991.

Therefore, I decided to write my Extended Essay on Sąjūdis and what was its role in the collapse of communism in Soviet Lithuania. Moreover, the 20th anniversary of Sąjūdis creation seemed to be a very favorable occasion as books were being published, movies were being shown and articles were being written on it. Therefore, I was capable of collecting a good range of resources and conducting a good research, based on which I wrote this paper.

I enjoyed writing this paper and looking at this broad topic of the collapse of communism from a Lithuanian perspective.
