a) The use of light alloy materials in aircraft construction

There are several light alloys used extensively in the construction of the aircraft due to different properties they obtain. Below are some of the light alloys and their use

Titanium alloys

Titanium alloys are normally used in the low pressure compressor casting and construction of fan blades in the turbofan engines. Different specification of the titanium alloys changes in the temperature limit. They attain tremendous strength to weight ratio. The high cost of the material restricts the maximum use of the material. But they are sometimes used in areas such as aircraft skins and intermediate potency structural parts. The inflammable personality also restricts its use in the section where there be any sparks.

Nickel alloys

Nickel alloys are used in a large variety in the manufacturing of an aircraft engines. Some of the famously known nickel alloys are chromium, alumel etc. They are loaded in their properties. Normally nickels alloys are specially designed to be used in high temperature resistant regions without lose of their mechanical properties. For example nickel alloys used in engines should retain its property for a long period of time

Magnesium alloys

Magnesium alloys are relatively very low in density compare to the other metal alloys. They have quite a few issues related to the strength but if alloyed properly the tensile strength can very well increase. Mixture of aluminium and zinc in magnesium forms wrought and cast magnesium alloys which can be used in the stringers or can be used in the wheels of the plane through cast. Shock resistant components of the airplane are made from high strength cast magnesium alloys.

Aluminium alloy

Aluminium alloys is the most vastly material used in the construction of the airplane. They are used in the components where corrosion resistant and less weight is required. The most common elements it contains are copper, zinc, magnesium,...
