Online businesses have the option of functioning in an overly secure or open e-commerce environment. Being that a business would protect its brick and mortar business with security devices as well as monitor the way their store is accessed; most merchants consider the benefits to establishing a website that is safe and secure for their e-commerce operations. At some point in our life, a few of us have had an encounter with our personal and financial information being passed between two parties over the internet but then taken by a third party such as a hacker. Anyone who engages in e-commerce such as shopping, selling, online banking, or applying for a job leaves behind a trail of digital information that exposes him or her to online security issues (Editorial Board, 2012, p. 101). Sadly, this kind of invasion of privacy and security still occurs today. That is why it is very important to carry out a secure and private exchange that prevents security breach from occurring.

Benefits of operating an e-commerce business within an open environment usually let customers navigate and browse around the website with ease, whereas, customers are not required to login to view the website. The transaction process takes less time because of this. Customers are allowed to view the catalog before making a purchase. The expenses related with operating an open environment are usually low. However, the drawbacks can have severe consequences in that customers’ information can be violated by hackers and they may be disposed to computer viruses more easily.
