Describe the Process used to recruit law enforcement personnel
Michigan State Trooper
The Michigan State Police have an 11 step process for considering new recruits for employment these steps include: The entry level law enforcement exam. The exam evaluates the skills, knowledge and ability related to law enforcement. Next is the experience and education evaluation questions. After passing the law enforcement exam recruits must give their personal information such as; name, address, and telephone numbers of employers, references, schools attended, and creditors. The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards or, (MCOLES) physical agility test is the next phase. The physical agility test has four different areas: vertical jump, sit-ups, push-ups and a half mile shuttle run. After passing the physical agility test there is a pre screening interview. The interview is used to screen applicants that do not meet the qualifications. If applicants are given permission to proceed there is a background investigation that follows. When the background investigation is completed there is an interview for hiring the possible applicant. A possible recruit will receive a “Conditional Offer of Employment, candidates who achieve a rating high enough to merit appointment to the Academy are given a Conditional Offer of Employment.” (Michigan state police)
Applicants that complete the selection process are aloud to join the next recruit school. The recruit school is from 19-21 weeks long. Recruits must live at the academy from Monday thru Friday. After graduating the academy recruits are placed in a post within the state of Michigan. There is also a probationary 17 week field training program. After the probationary program troopers are aloud to work alone.
