Abstract

There are always compromises in research design. The challenge is to maximize internal and external validity while exploring important large scale problems in real world contexts. In experimental research, identifying how to manipulate variables and control the factors that threaten the validity of the experiment is the difference a substantial research study and one with worthless results. Variables, controlled or not, are the basis for all statistics and if used wisely and controlled properly, they are very likely to add to the knowledge base in your specialty field. When using a design method that is valid and reliable, researchers are able to yield significant results. Like the saying goes, garbage in means garbage out.

Throughout history, experiments have been conducted to be able to predict various phenomenon. They are widely defined as a prescribed set of conditions which permit measurement of the effects of a particular treatment or outcome. They can be as complex as a ten year clinical trial for a new medication or as simple as an everyday ride in an elevator. Typically an experiment is constructed to be able to explain some kind of causation. While a simple ride in an elevator may not seem like an experiment, it and each step taken towards its ultimate outcome, are common examples of a search for a causal relationship which is what experimentation is all about. Throughout history, every researcher has strived to conduct a good experiment and obtain results that would make a great impact or lasting change in their field of study.

While researching the topic of experimental research, it has become apparent that an experiment should be executed carefully and methodically in order to achieve successful results. A successful experiment should include a lot of planning, and be completed over a long period of time.
