1. What are the functions of the skeleton?

The skeletal system provides shape, support and protection for the organs and soft tissues of the body. It also helps movement, blood cell creation and storage of minerals.

2. What is the difference between osteoclasts and osteoblasts?

An osteoblast builds bone while an osteoclast breaks bone.

3. How many bones do we have in our body?

There are 206 bones in our body however originally there are 300 hundred when we were born that fused together.

4. What do bones need in order to be healthy?

Bones need specific vitamins such as Vitamin D and calcium in order to stay healthy.

5. Differentiate between tendons, ligaments and joints.

A tendon is a band of connective tissue that connects muscles to bones and is elastic enough to withstand tension, while a joint is where two or more bones make contact. A ligament is a short band of dense connective tissue which connects bones to other bones in a joint.

6. What are the 2 main divisions of the skeletal system? Differentiate between the 2 and what bones are within each.

The axial and appendicular are the two divisions within the skeletal system. The axial skeleton composes of bones that form the axis of the body that support and protect organs. Examples include Skull, ethmoid bone, sphenoid bone, mandible, para-nasal sinuses, nasal septum, cervical vertebrae, vertebral column, sacrum, coccyx, thorax and ribs. Meanwhile the appendicle skeleton anchors the appendages to the axial skeleton including pectoral girdle, upper limb, humerus, ulna and radius, penvis, hip bones, lower limbs, femurs, tibia, fibia and arches of foot.

7. Give the four general categories of bones and their descriptions.
