Impacts on Food

When I go to the grocery store to do some grocery shopping, I’m the shopper that doesn’t look for where things came from or what they went through to get to the store I’m at. I recently have tried to make a healthier lifestyle for myself. I always thought it was just eat your fruits and veggies. But after this assignment, I’ve realized a lot more than just what the food is goes into health. Where food came from and how food got somewhere has a lot to do with how healthy it is.

I usually go to Wal-Mart for my grocery shopping. For my meal, if I bought a sirloin steak from there I would have chosen the fresh boneless top beef sirloin. After researching about Wal-Mart’s meat distributors, I found that they do not use COOL, which is country of origin label. I did find however that the meat orders are generated from the stores and then sent directly to the suppliers, who in-turn ship orders to a distribution center. Wal-Mart doesn’t supply any information on where they get their meat from. Wal-Mart uses MAP, modified air packaging, for case ready packaging. The retail product is sealed in a mix of gases injected into the container. Before the package is placed in the sales case, the outer layer of film is removed, leaving a gas-permeable layer of film beneath. This allows the meat to breathe and bloom and assume the colors associated with fresh meat (Peck, 2003).

My dad hauled potatoes there. I know how they distribute potatoes there. They are harvested and brought to the plants and then packaged into bags by conveyor belts and scales. From there they are distributed to whom they supply to. The potato plants however are very bad for the environment because of the greenhouse gases that are emitted into the atmosphere.
