Organizations are social systems. It’s necessary to understand its operations, in order to manage its people and processes. OB focuses on the behaviours of individuals and groups at work and seeks to provide explanations for such behaviour. OB is a composite multidisciplinary subject and includes many inputs and dimensions, the cognitive, behaviouristic, and social cognitive theories. The OB is needed to improve organizational effectiveness. Managers can use theory and knowledge of OB to improve management practices and can influence employees to attain organizational goals.

Literature Review:

OB for managers deals with recognizing, explaining and developing the attitude and behaviours of people within organizations. The study of OB requires a rudimentary understanding of psychology, anthropology, sociology, philosophy.

A manager needs to diagnose OB so as to recognise areas of concerns, short term and long term implications of any behaviour and develop best practices continuously. Managers having clear understanding of human resource management and strategic management are able to influence specific behaviours that help shape the culture of an organization. As every individual posses very unique traits and perspective, influencing specific behaviours in an organization can be a difficult task. Managers bring their expectations and experiences to the workforce which many not correlate with the organization’s goals. This creates a dilemma that can be contagious to others. Controlling such organizational ills is a battle with no end, which accurately explains why the study of OB is so important for an effective management. Being able to diagnose those issues and responding with well-formulated solutions is what managers strive for.
