Short Answer

51. The system that previously existed to the changes made during the Civil Rights movement can most definitely be considered as caste-like. The Civil Rights movement in the U.S. organized efforts to abolish public and private acts of racial discrimination towards African Americans and other disadvantaged groups throughout the 60’s and70’s. This system would be considered caste-like because your social class and membership is determined by birth and it is fixed for life. For example: if you were born in one of the southern states at this time you would most likely favor the ideas of slavery and segregation. Similarly, when you are born in the South your social class and outlook on slavery and segregation are fixed for life. So because you were born in the South you would have no choice but to be believe in inequality. I’d consider this caste-like because you have no freedom to choose what you believe in due to what region you were born. On the other hand, if you were born in the North you would be against the idea of slavery and inequality. The North fought for slavery to be abolished and forgotten forever because they believed in equality.
