Web-based e-mail is an email account which is accessed via a web browser. In order to access our email account we need to be connected to an internet. This method is ideal when we work on public computers as the data is never downloaded to the computer. It is also a better method to for people who occasionally access their email account. However, along with its advantages, web-based mail also has some drawbacks. The biggest concern associated with it that most of the websites do not give assurance of privacy and security. Frequent appearance of advertisements is another problem associated with web emails.

Internet message access protocol (IMAP) - based email are the emails that we access using client program like outlook and Vista Mail. This method allows the user to download messages from their web mails like Gmail, Yahoo, and Hotmail etc. onto their computer. The advantages of using IMAP – based email is that the user can access their emails (which were downloaded earlier) even when they are not connected to the internet. IMAP- based email also has drawbacks. The user can only receive new email when they are connected to the internet. Due to huge consumption of memory and space while accessing emails via IMAP client. Sometimes the computer gets slow and even freezes. Retrieving emails also becomes difficult due to huge volume of emails that is stored both on the server and in computers.

Both Web based and IMAP based emails have their own pros and cons. As per my experience I favor using IMAP based email as I can retrieve my emails on go and I do not have to depend on the internet. Not only that I can also link all of my web- based emails on it so accessing my email becomes easier and convenient.
