Topic: Mental Hygiene

Specific Speech Purpose: After listening to my speech, my audience will know/understand the meaning and concept of mental health and hygiene, factors affecting mental health, as well as functions, principles and limitation of mental hygiene.

Thesis Statement: Mental health is a complex subject, however, with the right knowledge and awareness on taking mental hygiene you can keep your mind healthy.

I. Introduction

A. Attention Step

  How many of you have seen a psychologist or a counsellor to assist you with a personal issue? Maybe some of here did but only hesitant to raise a hand. No one wants to be labelled mentally ill. Suicide rate has steadily risen in Philippines for 21 years. Cases showed that many of them suffered from some form of mental illness. According to WHO Regional Adviser in Mental Health, Dr Wang Xiangdong, suicide should be seen as a public mental health issue so it is socially acceptable to practice mental hygiene. Mental illness is so invisible. Humans have a long history of disregarding what they can't see. 

B. Clarification Step

The disability survey conducted by the NSO revealed that mental illness is the "third most common form of disability" after visual and hearing impairments. There is an average of 88 reported cases of mental illness per 100,000 Filipinos and 0.7% of the total household have a member with mental disability.

II. Body

A. It is important to completely understanding the meaning of being mentally healthy.

1. Mental health focuses on the importance of integration and wholeness of personality to define a mentally healthy person.

2. Jahoda proposes the six criteria of the mentally healthy individual to distinguish mentally healthy from unhealthy person.

3. Mental health is a condition of psychological maturity.

B. Mental hygiene is a science which deals with the process of attaining mental health and preserving mental health in the society
